Champion Cooling’s Bob Harris to Race the Champion Maui-Style Car at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona

Champion Cooling System’s own Bob Harris is gearing up to race in the Super Gas Class at the upcoming 54th NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. The race, which runs from February 6th through the 9th, is the first in a series of 24 races that take place throughout the United States.

 

Harris, who has been racing since 1989, is a four-time NHRA National event winner and has competed in every category from Pro Stock down. After a 12-year stint working in sales and marketing for K&N Filters and racing on the K&N Team, Harris made the move to Champion Cooling Systems in early November. Excited to join the fast-growing company, when the opportunity to race for Champion was discussed, Harris jumped at the chance.

 

“I love to race, and being able to go out and race while promoting the Champion brand is exciting,” Harris says. “Champion Cooling Systems is a great company that is growing by leaps and bounds, and I am thrilled to be a part of it. Being able to race a car with the Champion name on it, and let more people know about our great product line is just icing on the cake.”

 

The car that Harris will be piloting is a 2002 Grand Am built by Gary Hansen Race Cars of Montclair.  The car boasts an all chromoly chassis, carbon fiber body, a Hughes Powerglide Transmission and converter and a  572 ci Chevy powerplant that pushes about 1100-plus horsepower and 900 foot-pounds of torque. “It’s capable of running in the seven’s quite easily,” Harris states.

 

 

The race car belongs to Harris’ uncle and aunt, Les and Jeanette Harris of Aguanga, who built the car from scratch. The car’s unique paint job and its name, “Maui Style,”  come from the senior Harris’s love of the islands. Krazy Kolors by Billy B of Upland created the attention-grabbing one-of-a-kind paint job. Les Harris drove the car until he retired from racing in 2012. It was then that the younger Harris eagerly jumped behind the wheel. “I’m hoping to win my fifth National Title in the Champion Maui Style car,” Harris says. “Both the car and Champion Cooling belong in the Winner’s Circle.”

 

Next week’s event takes place at the historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona and will be NHRA fan’s first opportunity to see all of the new cars and paint schemes as well as meet all of the drivers who will be racing at speeds of more than 320 mph in an attempt to add their names to the NHRA record book’s list of NHRA Winternationals winners.
